Matsuemon canvas is a thick, durable, and lightweight fabric that was invented in Japan during the Edo period for use in sails.
In 1785, Koraku Matsuemon, a boat operator in Takasago, invented Matsuemon canvas as a way to create stronger and larger sails for freight sailboats. Matsuemon canvas was made from heavy banshu cotton, which was double-woven to create a thick and durable sail.
Matsuemon canvas is known for its unique texture, which comes from its extremely thick threads and special weave pattern. It's also water-resistant and has a classy gloss.
